Martti Vesala Soundpost Quintet

MARTTI VESALA SOUNDPOST QUINTET

Combining the eloquent sounds of Nordic Jazz with the exciting grooves of the 1960's Miles Davis Quintet.
This fine post-bop quintet led by trumpetist and composer Martti Vesala just released their second album. The traditional but modern five-piece consists of young Finnish top musicians: saxophonist Petri Puolitaival, pianist Joonas Haavisto, bassist Juho Kivivuori and drummer Ville Pynssi. Their most important influences include the dynamic groove of Miles Davis' 1960's quintet, experimental American jazz of the same era and saxophonist-composer Wayne Shorter's elegant tonal language.

Signed to the prestigious german label Ozella Music, the Quintet has released two albums: "Helsinki Soundpost" in November 2016 ja "Stars Aligned" in May 2018.

"The spirit of Miles Davis' '60 quintet is recalled in a smart, creative set of originals by Finnish trumpeter Martti Vesala on 'Helsinki Soundpost'." - John Ephland, DownBeat October 2017

"Taking 1960s Blue Note Records post-bop as a model, Finland's Martti Vesala Soundpost Quintet excels at sophisticated acoustic interplay." - Howard Mandel, DownBeat October 2018

Martti Vesala Soundpost Quintet has performed extensively in Finland, for example on a tour produced by the Finnish Jazz Federation in January-February 2017, Pori Jazz -festivals (2016 & 2018) and Tampere Jazz Happening 2018 -festival.

MANAGEMENT

Described as "a highly talented young man" by All About Jazz, Helsinki-based trumpeter and composer Martti Vesala (b. 1981) is one of the up-and-coming musicians in Finnish jazz, having won acclaim for his instrumental, compositional and pedagogical skills. Vesala is a Sibelius Academy graduate, having studied in the Nordic Master in Jazz programme under the instruction of today's leading jazz trumpetists, such as Tim Hagans, Gerard Presencer, Laurie Frink and Peter Asplund. A creative and experienced composer, Vesala has written original music for nearly two decades for ensembles of all sizes, ranging from quintet to big band. His original compositions contain catchy melodies supported by lush harmonies and the rhythmic layers of Afro-American heritage of jazz. As a trumpet player, Vesala's style is influenced by Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw, in addition to the more modern stylings of Dave Douglas and Kenny Wheeler.
